What a 4 oz paper cup is for
At 62 mm across and 62 mm tall, the 4 oz cup holds a single or double espresso with room for crema, and nothing larger. It is the cup a café reaches for when the drink is meant to be finished standing at the counter — a ristretto, a cortado, a macchiato — and the one a roastery hands out for tasting flights, where four small pours matter more than one big one.
It takes a hot drink, so it is printed on single-wall board with a food-safe inner coating. No sleeve is made for a cup this small and none is needed: an espresso is drunk before the cup gets uncomfortable to hold. A 62 mm flat lid fits if the drink has to travel a few steps, though most 4 oz cups are served open.
The panel you design on is short and wide once the cup is unrolled, which suits a logo and one line of type far better than a paragraph. Artwork that wraps the full circumference reads well here because the eye takes in the whole cup at once at this size. Supermarket sampling, hotel turndown service and dessert counters are the other places these are ordered in quantity.
One thing that only shows up at this size: the cup is printed flat and then rolled, so there is a glued overlap down one side. On a 62 mm cup that seam is a larger share of the circumference than on a big cup, and a pattern that has to meet itself across it will show the join. Either design the seam in as a deliberate edge, or use a motif that does not need to line up.
