What a 20 oz paper cup is for
At 95 mm across and 150 mm tall, the 20 oz cup is a cold-drink cup. It is built for iced coffee, soda, iced tea and lemonade — drinks served over ice, where the ice takes a third of the volume and the drink still needs to look generous.
Cold cups differ from hot ones in the coating rather than the shape: the inner face has to hold condensation without the board going soft, and the print has to survive a wet outside. A sleeve is not used here — nobody needs insulating from a cold drink — so the whole cup is printable, and a straw slot lid is the usual pairing.
This is the largest panel in the plain cup range apart from the 22 oz, so it is the one to choose if the artwork is the point: full-wrap photography, a dense pattern, or a big single graphic all hold up. Because the cup is often carried outside, the design is seen by people who never came into the shop, which is worth more than the cup costs. Fast food counters, juice bars, cinemas and event caterers order this size hardest in summer.
The lid is where cold cups have changed most. A straw slot, a strawless sipper and a flat lid with a cross-cut all fit the same rim and none of them behave the same way — the sipper needs a cup that does not flex, the slot suits a thick drink, the cross-cut is the cheapest. Decide which before ordering, because a cup and the wrong lid is a complaint at the counter rather than a saving.
