What a 16 oz paper cup is for
The 16 oz cup is the large hot drink: 90 mm across like the 12 oz, but 135 mm tall. Keeping the rim the same means one lid covers both sizes, which is the main reason cafés pair them. It is the cup for a large latte, a double-shot filter, a hot chocolate, or a tea for someone who is settling in.
Because it holds more, it stays hot longer and is held longer, so a sleeve or an insulating wall matters more here than at 12 oz. Ripple-wall and double-wall versions of this size exist for exactly that reason. Single-wall plus a printed sleeve is still the cheaper route if you are already printing sleeves.
The taller panel gives artwork room to breathe, and vertical designs that fail on a short cup work here — a tall logo lockup, a repeating column pattern, or type running up the side. Watch the area the sleeve covers if you use one: on a 16 oz that band sits across the middle of the cup, so keep anything you need read either above or below it. Drive-through counters, cinema foyers and workplace canteens are the heaviest users.
Treat the cup and the lid as one system. The 90 mm rim is what makes the 12 and 16 oz share a lid, and that only holds while both cups come from the same specification — a change of supplier or a change of board can move the rim enough that the old lids no longer seat properly. When you re-order, check the lid on the new cup before the old stock runs out.
