What a 12 oz ripple-wall cup is for
A ripple-wall 12 oz is the same 90 × 110 mm latte cup as the plain version, wrapped in a second layer of fluted board. The flutes trap air, so the cup can be held comfortably with a drink hot enough to steam — no sleeve, no doubling up, no burnt fingers.
It costs more per cup than single-wall plus a sleeve, and less than single-wall plus a sleeve once you count the sleeve's own print run, its storage and the second thing your staff have to pick up. If you serve hot drinks all day and your customers sit in, the ripple wall usually wins on both cost and how the cup feels in the hand.
The fluting gives the outside a ribbed texture, which changes what printing suits it: flat areas of solid colour and bold type hold up, while fine detail and small text lose definition across the ridges. Design with that in mind and the cup reads as deliberately premium. Speciality coffee shops, hotel lobbies and anywhere serving a drink hot enough to need two hands are the usual buyers.
The fluted outer layer is a separate board, which opens up something a single-wall cup cannot do: it can be a different stock from the inside. An unbleached kraft outer over a white inner is the classic speciality look, and because the kraft is unprinted except for one colour, it is cheaper than a full-colour cup while looking more considered than one.
