What an 8 oz double-wall cup is for
Two smooth boards with an insulating air gap, 80 by 56 by 92 mm — the flat white size with a flat outer wall. It insulates like a ripple cup and prints like a single-wall one, which is why it is the specification most brand-led cafés end up on.
The smooth board is the reason. A full-bleed photograph, a soft gradient, a metallic-look flood or small precise type all survive on a flat wall and all degrade on a fluted one. If the cup is part of a visual identity rather than just a container, this is the wall to choose.
It costs more than ripple at the same size and is slightly slimmer in the hand, which some counters prefer for stacking. Speciality cafés, hotel groups, airline and rail catering, and anywhere the cup is photographed as often as it is drunk from.
The insulation depends on the gap staying a gap. A double-wall cup that is crushed in a box or gripped hard enough to dent loses the air between the boards at that point, and the heat comes straight through where it was pressed. It is not a fragile cup, but it is one to store upright and in its sleeve rather than loose in a crate.
