What an 8 oz paper cup is for
The 8 oz cup — 80 mm across, 92 mm tall — is the small hot drink: a flat white, a cortado served long, a single-shot latte, a regular tea. It is the size most independent cafés put on the counter as their default "small", and the size that suits a milk drink where the ratio still tastes right rather than being mostly foam.
It is a hot-drink cup. Single-wall board is usual, and this is the smallest size where a sleeve genuinely helps, because an 8 oz drink is held long enough for the heat to come through. An 80 mm lid fits, and most cafés stock one lid across their 8 oz and 12 oz range by keeping the rim diameter the same.
Because the cup is short, a design with a horizon line — a band of colour around the middle, or type set along the rim — tends to work better than a tall illustration, which gets cut by the roll of the cup. Office coffee services, breakfast counters and tea rooms order this size in the largest volumes.
Not all of the wall is printable. A band at the rim is left clear where the cup is curled, and a band at the base is lost where the bottom is crimped in — and on a cup only 92 mm tall those two bands take a noticeable share of the height. The editor shows the printable panel rather than the whole wall, so design inside what it gives you rather than to the cup dimensions.
