What a 4 oz double-wall cup is for
Two smooth boards with an air gap between them, at 62 by 42 by 62 mm. The gap does the insulating and the outer board stays flat, which is the whole difference from a ripple wall: you get the rigidity and the warmth without giving up a smooth print surface.
At espresso size that matters more than it sounds. A 4 oz cup has very little area to work with, so if the design is a photograph, a gradient or fine type, a flat wall is the only one that will hold it. On a fluted cup those details break up.
It is also noticeably stiffer than a single-wall cup of the same size, which stops the flex that makes a small cup feel cheap when it is picked up full. Speciality coffee, dessert service, hotel rooms and sampling at events.
The two walls have to go somewhere, and at this size they come out of the interior. A 4 oz double-wall cup holds slightly less than a single-wall cup of the same outside dimensions, which is a real consideration when the drink is a measured double shot. If the volume has to be exact, check the fill line rather than trusting the nominal size.
