What a 4 oz ripple-wall cup is for
A 62 by 42 by 62 mm espresso cup with a fluted outer board wrapped around the inner one. At this size the flutes are not really about heat — an espresso is drunk in a minute and never gets uncomfortable to hold. They are about how the cup reads in the hand.
That makes it a presentation cup rather than a practical one. It is what a roastery uses for a tasting flight, a cortado or a single shot served without a saucer, where the texture of the cup is part of the impression the coffee makes.
The fluted surface takes ink slightly differently from a smooth wall: solid colour and bold type look excellent, while hairline rules and very small text sit across the ridges and soften. Design in shapes rather than fine detail and it will print beautifully. Speciality roasters, tasting rooms and dessert menus are the usual buyers.
Ripple cups nest much less tightly than smooth ones, because the flutes of one cup sit on the flutes of the next instead of sliding inside them. On a cup this small that is a large proportional change — a sleeve of fifty takes noticeably more shelf than fifty single-wall cups. Ask for the packed height per sleeve if counter space is tight.
