What a side mortise lock tray is for
A glueless tray locked at the sides: each end wall carries a pair of long tabs finished in a half-round mortise head that reaches the middle of the side wall, and is trapped there when that wall rolls over and its return comes down inside. The lock is hidden — from outside the tray simply looks clean.
Compared with the other glueless trays, this one is the tidiest to look at, because nothing overlaps on the outside face and the corners are closed without a visible buckle. That makes it the best of the three for a tray that is going to be photographed or put on a table in front of a customer.
Two things to know when specifying it: the width is capped at the length and the height at the width, so it cannot be made tall and narrow. Presentation trays, retail display, bakery counters and gift service suit it more than back-of-house handling.
It is the one to pick if the outside of the tray is printed. Nothing overlaps on the outer face, so a design runs across the walls without a buckle or a tab interrupting it — which is not true of the handshake or the four-fold. If the artwork matters more than the corner strength, this is the trade to make.
