What a four-folds tray is for
A glueless tray whose walls fold four times: each wall turns a full-depth return inward, then a second shallower one chamfered at both ends, and each corner is closed by a flap trapped under the long wall return. Of the glueless trays this is the one with the deepest doubled rim.
That rim is the reason to choose it. A tray that has to hold weight, or be picked up by its edge when it is full, keeps its shape here where a single-wall tray bows. The cost is board and a slightly smaller interior, because every wall is two or three thicknesses.
On corrugated the knife adds a roll strip between each wall and its return so the fold does not crack the flute — worth knowing if you are specifying board, because it changes the blank. Catering, bakery, meal kits and anything heavy enough to test a tray edge are where it belongs.
It is the slowest of the three glueless trays to put up. Four folds on every wall is four movements per wall, and at a lunch rush that adds up in a way a single-fold tray does not. Choose it when the tray has to carry weight and there is time to make it up in advance; choose a simpler lock when trays are folded to order.
