What a three-cup insert is for
A carrier deck with three 74 mm holes: the cups drop through and hang by their rims, and four legs folded under the deck hold the whole thing clear of the surface. It is not a tray with cups sitting in it — nothing touches the bottom of a cup, which is why a full drink does not tip when the carrier is lifted.
The design surface is the deck itself, and it is seen from directly above by whoever is carrying it — usually for several minutes, walking. The area between the three holes is the usable panel; keep the brand there rather than at the edges, which are gripped.
On 1.5 mm board it takes three full cups without the deck sagging between the holes, which is the failure everyone has seen with a thin carrier. Coffee shops, drive-throughs, office catering and delivery kitchens order these, usually printed to match the cups they hold.
Three is a deliberate number. Most drinks orders are one, two or three cups, and a four-hole carrier carrying three is both wasteful and unstable, because the empty hole lets the deck twist. The other thing to know is that a loaded carrier cannot be stacked on another one, so a large order means several carriers side by side rather than a tower.
