What an SOS shopping bag is for
The kraft retail and takeaway bag: a square base, flat sides and rope handles, at 320 by 112 by 352 mm. SOS means it stands open on its own once the base is squared, which is what lets someone pack it one-handed on a counter.
It is the largest carrier here and the one most likely to be reused, which changes what the print is worth. A bag that goes home, gets emptied and then carries something else for a year is advertising for as long as it lasts, so the two broad faces are worth real design rather than a logo in a corner.
Kraft board takes a warm, limited palette better than photographic colour — design for two or three inks rather than full colour and it will look considered rather than compromised. Retail, takeaway restaurants, bakeries, delis and gift shops all use this shape.
Match the handle to the load. Rope handles look and feel the best and are the ones that pull through the board if the bag is filled with anything heavy, unless a reinforcing patch is specified behind each knot. For a retail bag carrying light goods the plain rope is fine; for a bag that will hold bottles or takeaway containers, ask for the patch and check it does not land on a printed detail.
