What a ladder-type tote bag is for
A flared four-walled carrier glued at the corners, with its mouth a quarter wider than its base and turned in on a hem front and back. At 220 by 80 by 280 mm it is narrow and upright, made to carry something tall without it falling over.
The flare is what makes it easy to load — the mouth is noticeably wider than the base, so a bottle or a box drops in without being aimed. The hem at the mouth stops the paper tearing at the opening, which is where an unhemmed bag always fails first.
Glued corners rather than folded ones mean it holds its shape when it is full and heavy, and the narrow footprint means it stands on a counter without taking it over. Bottles, wine, deli goods, takeaway containers and gift packaging all suit it.
It has no handle. That is the thing to notice before ordering, because it is easy to look at a tall paper carrier and assume one — this is held in the arm or set in a larger bag, which suits a bottle handed across a counter and does not suit a customer walking a mile with it. If a handle is needed, the flat-mouth handbag or the SOS shopping bag are the shapes to look at instead.
