What a stand up pouch with a zipper is for
The gusseted stand-up pouch, with a reclosable zipper welded in under the top seal — the same base, the same seal tables, and a twelve millimetre zipper band at every size. It is the most specified pouch in retail food, because it both stands and recloses.
The combination is what sells it. A customer picks it off a shelf because it stands and faces them, and keeps it because it shuts again. For anything bought weekly and used daily, the pouch stops being packaging after the first use and becomes the container it lives in.
Design around two dead bands rather than one: the gusset fold at the bottom and the zipper strip at the top. What is left is a clean rectangle in the middle of the face, and that is where the brand, the product name and the weight all have to sit. Coffee is the classic use, then pet food, snacks and cereals.
Insist on a tear notch above the zipper. Without one, a customer opens the pouch by tearing wherever it gives, which is often through the zip itself — and a resealable pouch that will not reseal is worse than a plain one, because they paid for the feature. The notch is a few pence and it is the difference between the zipper working once and working for a month.
