What a 3 side seal pouch with a zipper is for
The same flat three-sided pouch with a press-to-close zipper welded in below the top seal, so it opens and shuts again. The zipper sits ten to twenty millimetres down depending on how tall the pouch is, and its band is twelve millimetres at every size.
Add a zipper when the contents are used more than once — which is most dry food. The customer cuts or tears above the seal, and from then on the pouch is the storage as well as the packaging, which is worth more to them than the few pence it adds.
For the design, remember that top band is lost: twelve millimetres of zipper plus the seal above it is a strip where nothing should be printed that matters, and the tear notch usually sits there too. Put the brand in the middle third of the face. Snacks, coffee, pet treats, nuts and dried fruit.
It is the pouch most often sold inside something else — a shelf-ready carton, a multipack sleeve, a gift box. If that is the plan, design the two together: the pouch face that shows through the carton cut-out is the only part anyone sees on a shelf, and it should carry the mark at the height the cut-out reveals rather than at the middle of the pouch.
