What a back seal pillow pouch is for
The simplest pouch there is: one web of film wrapped into a tube, sealed down the back in a fin, then flattened and sealed across the top and the bottom. One web instead of two means less film, fewer seals and the lowest cost per unit of anything on this list.
It runs on a vertical form-fill-seal machine straight from a reel, which is why it is what crisps, sweets and snacks come in — the pouch is made, filled and closed in one motion at high speed. If you are packing tens of thousands, this is usually the honest answer.
The fin seal down the back takes a strip out of the printable area and is visible from behind, so treat the back as having a seam and design the front as the face. The two seals across the top and bottom read the height, the fin reads the width. Crisps, snacks, confectionery and powders.
The one thing you do not choose freely here is the width. The pouch is made from a reel, so its flat width comes from the film width the line is set up for, and sizes step rather than slide. Decide the fill weight first and let the pack size follow from it, instead of drawing a pouch to a dimension and finding no reel matches.
