What a clamshell burger box is for
A clamshell hinges rather than locks: a tray and a lid on one blank, joined along the back, so it opens in one movement and shuts under its own spring. It is the fastest burger box to fill on a line, which is exactly why busy kitchens use it.
The lid is the front of the pack. It is what faces up on a tray, what is photographed and what the customer looks at while deciding to open it, so it deserves the design attention. The tray walls are visible only from the side and are usually the first thing to get marked, so keep them plain or use them for legal and allergen type.
A hinged box holds heat and steam, so the board needs a grease barrier and, for a crisp burger, some ventilation. Burger counters, chicken shops, breakfast muffin service and delivery kitchens are the users — anywhere the food goes out in seconds and the box has to close with one hand.
The one weakness is the spring. A clamshell closes under its own tension rather than a lock, and in a delivery bag on a scooter it can work open. The usual answer is a sticker or a paper band across the front, which costs almost nothing and gives you a second printed surface exactly where the customer breaks it — worth designing deliberately rather than buying plain.
