What burger paper is for
A square greaseproof sheet, 254 by 254 mm — ten inches each way. It wraps a burger, lines a basket, separates a stack or goes under fries on a tray, and it is the cheapest printed item in a takeaway by a wide margin.
That is its real argument. Per customer served, a printed sheet costs a fraction of a printed box, and every burger handed over carries the brand whether it was wrapped, lined or just set down on it. For a small kitchen it is usually the first thing worth printing.
Design for grease. The sheet goes translucent where food touches it, so a design that depends on a pale ground will change once it is in use — strong line work, a bold mark and open space hold up, fine tonal images do not. Keep to food-safe inks and a limited palette. Burger bars, fried chicken, delis, food trucks and market stalls.
Design it as a repeat, not as a poster. The sheet is printed and cut from a reel, and in service it is torn, folded, scrunched and set down at any angle, so a single centred logo is visible on perhaps one sheet in three. An all-over repeating pattern with the mark woven through it reads correctly whichever way the sheet ends up — and wastes none of the 254 mm.
