What a pizza box is for
The corrugated clamshell: a base with four walls, a lid hinged off the back that folds forward over everything, a tuck that comes down at the front and locks into the tongue, and a foot at each corner so a stack of boxes does not press down on the pizza below. Corners cut at a true twenty-four degrees.
At 308 mm across this is the twelve-inch box, the size most pizzerias sell as standard. The lid is effectively the whole brand: boxes are carried flat, stacked flat and set on a table flat, so nothing but the top is reliably seen until the moment it is opened.
E-flute gives it the rigidity to be carried on one hand and the insulation to keep a pizza hot for a delivery ride, and the corner feet are what stop a delivery bag of six boxes crushing the bottom one. Pizzerias, delivery kitchens, frozen pizza brands and event caterers are the buyers.
It is almost always ordered as a ladder — nine, twelve and fourteen inch on one design — and that is where most pizza artwork goes wrong. A logo fixed at a size that fills the nine-inch lid is lost on the fourteen, and one drawn for the fourteen overwhelms the nine. Set it as a proportion of the lid rather than a measurement, and check all three sizes before signing anything off.
