What a hexagonal pizza box is for
A hexagonal pizza box is the square box with its two front corners cut away, and each of those cuts becomes a finger-lock that holds the lid shut. It uses less board than a square box of the same pizza diameter, and it closes without tape, which removes a step at the counter and a cost from every order.
The cut corners change where the artwork goes. The front face is shorter than a square box, and the two angled faces sit at roughly forty-five degrees to it, so a logo centred on the front is flanked by two panels that are seen almost as often. Treat those three faces as one composition rather than a front and two throwaways.
The lid is the surface that matters: pizza boxes are carried flat and stacked, so the top is the only thing anyone sees until it is opened. Pizzerias, delivery kitchens and frozen-pizza brands choose the hexagon when they want a box that looks deliberate and saves board at the same time.
The finger-locks can be opened and closed again, which a taped box cannot, so leftovers go home in the same box they arrived in. It also means no tape on the counter — one less consumable and one less second per order. What it does not do is share parts with a square box: lids, liners and inserts cut for a square box will not fit a hexagon, so change the whole set or none of it.
