What a happy meal box is for
This is the takeaway carton with an M handle: four walls that taper in and two flaps that arch over the top to make a grip. It carries a whole meal — a burger, a side, a small drink or a toy — in one hand, and it closes without tape or a bag.
The handle is the design problem and the design opportunity. It is cut out of the top flaps, so whatever you print there is interrupted by the arch and then folded away from view when the box is open. Put the brand on the four walls, and use the handle area for something that still reads when it is bent over on itself.
It is a childrens meal box in most kitchens, which changes the brief: the artwork is often the reason the meal is chosen, and it is frequently changed for promotions. Design it so the shape can be reprinted with a new illustration without redrawing the structure. Fast food chains, family restaurants and cinema kids menus are the buyers.
Check what actually fits before ordering. The walls taper inward, so the usable floor is smaller than the mouth suggests, and a burger clamshell that slides in easily at the top can refuse to sit flat on the base. Measure the tallest and widest thing the box has to carry, including the lid of the drink, and size to that rather than to the meal on paper.
