What a Chinese takeout box is for
The oyster pail is a base with four walls that lock into each other at the top, closing without glue and opening flat into a plate. It is leakproof enough for noodles and sauce, stacks in a delivery bag without crushing, and is recognised instantly, which is worth more than most packaging ever manages.
The four walls fold in a fixed order, so one of them ends up on top and is the face a customer sees when the box is handed over. Put the brand there. The wire or card handle crosses the lid, so keep the centre of the top clear or your logo is cut in half by it.
A grease and moisture barrier is essential — this is the one pack on the list that regularly holds sauce. Noodle bars, Asian takeaways, poke and rice-bowl kitchens and increasingly salad and breakfast counters use it, because a box that opens into a plate suits eating at a desk.
Because the walls open out flat into a plate, the inside is a surface too — and almost nobody uses it. A single colour printed inside costs little and is seen for the whole meal, which is longer than the outside is looked at. If the budget only stretches to one printed face, though, keep it on the wall that folds uppermost.
