Whether you are running a food corner or you own an art and craft gallery, one thing that you need is the use of glassine paper. This paper has a unique appearance as compared to the rest of the custom paper and is widely used across various industries.

At our company, we manufacture paper with high-quality material so that it can sufficiently serve the purpose for which you invested in it. You can also opt for different designs along with your company logo to get custom glassine paper in the form of your brand’s promotional tool.

    What Is Glassine Paper?

This paper is exceptionally smooth and glossy in appearance. Its translucent nature gives it a unique look. Not only this, but it has exceptional resistance to air, water, and grease. Like all the custom food papers, it is also made of wood pulp that goes through a rigorous refining and super calendaring that compresses the paper into dense fiber and converts the paper into a barrier-like film.

Due to its neutral pH and resistant nature, glassine paper rolls are used in the protection of sensitive products that range from delicate archival documents to high-end food products.

The Manufacturing Process Of Glassine Paper

The manufacturing process is the main reason why glassine paper sheets are so different than the rest of the custom papers. In this, we combine traditional paper manufacturing with specialized techniques that produce a custom paper with a smooth and translucent surface.

    Wood Pulp Production

Customized glassine sheets are made from wood pulp. Here we use hardwood sources such as oak and birch. These fibers are refined to get paper with high strength and durability. Sometimes we also use a blend of softwood and hardwood. In the pulping process, wood chips are mechanically as well as chemically processed.

With these processes, we get cellulose fibers from the breakdown of lignin. The resulting pulp is then treated with water to remove impurities for a white and uniform base. For smooth glassine paper sheets, lignin must be removed as it may affect the transparency and pH of the paper.

    Sheet Formation

In this process, the paper pulp is spread over a mowing mesh in order to remove the water content from the paper. During this process, water is drained, and cellulose fiber is set to form a dense sheet. This stage is similar to conventional paper making and imparting the paper its final properties.

After this, the wet customized glassine paper passed through a series of presses that squeezed out the excess water. This sheet is then dried by heated cylinders or dryers. We carefully control the drying process so that the moisture content in glassine paper rolls is sufficient to start the remaining processes.

    Supercalendering

It is a process in which the sheets of the material are passed through a subsequent series of hard metal-covered and sift fiber or cotton-covered rollers. This process further smoothens the surface and aligns the cellulose fibers to reduce porosity.

    Achieving Density And Gloss

Super Calendaring is the main process that gives glassine paper rolls their signature smoothness and glossy look. The degree of pressure, the moisture content, and the number of roller nips are controlled carefully to get the desired results. As per the statistical studies, custom glassine paper has a density of 1.5 to 2 times greater than that of the regular paper, and its grammage ranges from 40 to 90 GSM per square meter.

    Chemicals Used In Paper Manufacturing

Several chemical processes are used to produce glassine paper bags and sheets. These chemicals are also essential for the unique properties of the paper. Refining and bleaching are the major processes in which we use the following chemicals:

    Bleaching Agents

Bleaching agents are used to remove excess lignin and to brighten up the pulp. The type of bleaching agent has an impact on the pH and clarity of the paper. We use the following bleaching agents:

    • Hydrogen peroxide
    • Chlorine dioxide
    • Sodium hypochlorite

    Sizing Agents

Sizing is commonly used in the custom paper to enhance its absorbency with the use of coatings, as we have seen in butcher paper manufacturing. These sizing agents and additives include starch that fills the microscopic gaps between the paper pores and reduces the absorbency of the paper.

    Fillers

Fillers are used on the paper to get the desired optical properties. At the time of pulp manufacturing, we add the fillers and get the desired brightness. Some of the common fillers that we use are:

    • Clay
    • Calcium carbonate
    • Titanium dioxide

    Polymers

Each customer has their own demands, and some need a paper that is high-end and can endure significant pressure. For such a paper, we add synthetic polymers to the paper pulp. These polymers are added in a very small concentration to give the paper properties like greaseproof paper.

How Glassine Paper Differs from Related Paper Types

Glassine paper is significantly different than the rest of the custom papers. Though it shares similar physical appearances, it is substantially different from the rest of the papers due to different manufacturing processes and the use of chemicals. The key differences are listed in the table below:

Aspect Glassine Wax Paper Parchment Paper Greaseproof Paper Deli Paper
Composition & Coating Super calendared structure Paraffin coating Silicone treated Chemically treated Wax coated
Densely compacted Regular paper Non-stick surface Low porosity Plastic coated
