Durability Of Custom Kraft Paper Sheets

The durability of kraft is mainly due to a process known as “the Kraft Process.” In this process, a stronger pulp is produced using wood pulp. This material is one of the most sustainable alternatives to other plastic-based wrapping papers and is available in two forms, namely bleached and unbleached kraft.

Materials And Manufacturing Process

Custom printed kraft paper rolls are manufactured using hard and soft wood fibers. These fibers are then transformed into wood pulp that undergoes chemical and mechanical processes. We use softwood fibers as they contain long cellulose fibers that impart strength to the material and give durability to the final product. These long fibers allow kraft to resist tearing, which makes it an excellent option for heavy-duty applications.

In addition to softwood fiber, we use hardwood fiber in custom kraft wrapping paper, which improves its surface properties. Hardwood fibers are shorter in length and make the paper surface smooth, which ultimately facilitates printing. To reduce the cost of the packaging, we sometimes use recycled paper. This allows for the reduction of pollution and also has the inherent properties of the quality surface area of the recycled paper. The manufacturing process of this paper is as follows; each step is crucial to meet the quality:

Pulping

In this process, wood pulp is immersed in the chemical solution of sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide. They are the best digesters and penetrate the wood chips, break down the lignin, and release cellulose fibers. We maintain precise temperature and pressure for several hours to ensure that the wood is sufficiently “cooked” without any damage to cellulose.

Washing And Screening

After the pulping process, we obtain the slurry that contains cellulose fibers and various other impurities, such as residual lignin and hemicelluloses in addition to inorganic waste. In the next step, we remove the impurities with the help of counter-current systems. Fresh water is used to remove the chemical remnants and dissolved lignin. After washing, the pulp undergoes screening to remove the oversized particles and contaminants. The homogenous pulp obtained by this process is then transferred to the next step.

Bleaching (Optional)

If you do not want custom kraft brown paper, then you can select the bleaching. In this process, custom kraft paper is bleached to give it a white color. Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) or chlorine dioxide (ClO₂) are used as environmentally friendly bleaching agents to remove the color.

Sheet Formation And Drying

Once the pulp is clean and, if necessary, bleached, it is diluted with water and distributed onto a moving mesh screen or forming fabric. This is the stage of sheet formation where individual fibers begin to intertwine and form a continuous mat. As the water drains through the screen, the fibers come into closer contact, initiating the formation of the custom kraft paper packaging. The partially formed sheet is then passed through a series of pressing rollers. These rollers remove excess water and further consolidate the fiber network, contributing to the strength of the paper.

After the pulp is cleared and bleached, it undergoes the sheet formation process. The pulp is diluted with water and is spread onto a moving mesh or forming fabric. In this stage, custom kraft paper wrappers are produced. When the water drains, the fibers come into contact with each other and bond strongly. The drying process not only solidifies the structure of the paper but also sets the thickness and density of the paper. After this process, another step takes place, which is known as calendaring. In this process, the paper is passed between smooth rolls that further smoothen the paper surface and give a uniform thickness to the paper.

Coating And Finishing

In certain cases, customers are looking for coated paper that can have properties like that of parchment or wax paper. In such cases, we apply different coatings on the surface of the kraft.
